iFolder: Sharing Folder and Files over the Internet

Posted by – October 8, 2005

When I used to do work for IntelliMark at the Upper Dauphin Area School District I got to see iFolder before Novell opened it up via the GPL. The general idea was that you could synchronize folders on your desktop/laptop to the server over HTTP/HTTPS. That way if you were a mobile user or you were at home you did not have to VPN in just to modify a document. You could modify it and let iFolder synchronize it to the network share.

Now that Novell was gracious enough to open iFolder up, I decided it was time to install it and start using it myself. I have it running on Gentoo right now, and have started on an ebuild. It is running great, and I have been using it to synchronize documents between workstations without any issues!

While I am very happy with iFolder, there are some very exciting improvements on the roadmap. They plan on making a pluging for GAIM that would synchronize log files and settings. As well as synchronizing web browser bookmarks! All in all, I am very excited about iFolder.
